L’ attuale Cimitero ebraico sorge là dove fin dal 1459 esisteva un hortazzo per la sepoltura degli ebrei correggesi. Utilizzato fino a poco prima della metà del Seicento e successivamente abbandonato, quando nel 1783 quando il Governatore estense di  Correggio ordinò alla Municipalità e alla Comunità ebraica di costruire nuovi cimiteri extra-urbani, gli Anziani dell’Università Israelitica acquistarono, pur di malavoglia, dall’Avvocato Isidoro Vari, un terreno per ampliare l’antico cimitero. La prima sepoltura avvenne nel 1808, sebbene anche il cimitero urbano dietro la Rocchetta rimanesse in uso fino al 1865. Affidato alle cure dell’Opera Pia Israelitica di Pubblica Beneficenza che sosteneva anche le spese relative al seppellimento dei poveri israeliti residenti in Correggio, a partire dal 1866 prese definitivamente il posto del cimitero urbano dismesso.
Sono poco meno di una settantina le inumazioni (con lapidi in ebraico, in italiano e bilingui) attualmente identificabili, datate tra il 1828 ed il 1958.

The current Jewish cemetery is located where a hortazzo for the burial of the Correggio Jews had existed since 1459. Used until shortly before the mid-seventeenth century and subsequently abandoned, when in 1783  the Este Governor of Correggio ordered the Municipality and the Jewish community to build new extra-urban cemeteries, the Elders of the Israelite University, albeit reluctantly, bought a piece of land from lawyer Isidoro Vari, in order to expand the ancient cemetery. The first burial took place in 1808, although the urban cemetery behind the Rocchetta also remained in use until 1865. Entrusted to the care of the Pious Israelite Work of Public Charity which also supported the expenses related to the burial of the poor Israelites residing in Correggio, starting from 1866, it replaced the urban cemetery that had just fallen into disuse.
There’s a mere seventy burials, dated between 1828 and 1958 (with gravestones in Hebrew, Italian or bilingual) currently identifiable on the spot.
